Don't let the summer weather get your car down! Use these simple maintenance tips to keep your car at its best all season!

Tips to Help You Care for Your Car This Summer

As summer temperatures start to soar, prepare your vehicle to take on the heat with minimal issues. It doesn't make much work to get your car ready, just some routine inspections and maintenance. If you're not sure where to get started, this information from Advanced Filtration Technologies, Inc can help!

Don't Let Your Battery Die

Contrary to popular belief, the winter cold isn't as bad as the summer heat when it comes to your battery life. Since the summer tends to be hot and humid, your car's battery can suffer from some serious side effects. The heat is known to cause even more strain on your battery while also causing your battery fluid to evaporate. This means that any problems that already existed may be worse in the heat. Meanwhile, the humidity can cause corrosion around your battery and its connections. This leaves you at serious risk for malfunctions. If your battery is almost fine years old, this is the perfect time to replace it since most batteries last anymore from three to five years. If you're not sure how old it is, get it tested to see how much life it has left.

Proper Tire Pressure

The winter cold can cause your batteries to deflate, and the opposite is true of the summer heat. To avoid having overinflated tires which can lead to other road issues, check on your tire pressure regularly. Keep in mind that the very hot roads can also add more strain on your tires. If your tires are already quite worn, this can lead to blowouts and flats. While you check on your tire pressure, take a couple minutes to also inspect your tread. If it's visibly worn, a new set of tires may be a good purchase. Don't forget to also check on your spare tire. You wouldn't want to discover that your spare is flat right when you need it, would you?

Avoid an Overheating Engine

The summer heat alone won't cause your engine to overheat. For this to happen, there needs to be an already existing issue in your cooling system. To prevent your engine from overheating, keep an eye on your coolant and inspect your cooling system. Leaks, worn belts, and cracked hoses can all lead to overheating, so don't ignore these signs. If you notice steam coming out from under your hood or if your coolant light in your dashboard lights up, don't ignore it! Pull over immediately before any engine damage is caused. Another fluid you will want to keep an eye on this summer is your motor oil. One of the many jobs it performs is keeping your engine cool, so be sure to use the best. Keep Your Fluids in Check

Beyond your motor oil and coolant, there are a few other fluids you should keep tabs on this summer. Add your transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid to your list of fluids to keep track of. Check their levels often and top them off when they're running low. If you notice you're constantly running low on a certain fluid, this may indicate you have a leak. Get this checked out as soon as you can to avoid further issues.

Get Your A/C Serviced

Many people don't like to use their air conditioning because it is known to waste fuel. However, sometimes turning on the a/c is totally necessary. If you're driving through some extreme heat, your air conditioning won't only keep you comfortable, it will also keep you alert and safe. This is why it's so important that you make sure your air conditioning works before taking off on a road trip. Try your best to get your air conditioning early in the season in order to avoid long waits or backed up appointments.
